While the American flag symbolizes the ideals, hopes and dreams of our great nation each state flag represents it’s own identity. Modern U.S. state flags date back as far as 1890 and were mainly designed and adopted for use between 1893 and World War 1. U.S. State Flag Code for displaying with the flag of the Untied States. In a group of U.S. state flags, the American Flag should be flown in the center of the group and the highest. The American Flag should be hoisted first and lowered last. The blue represents the skies of Colorado, the white represents the snow covered mountains, the ruddy earth is represented by the color red while the yellow disk shows off the sunshine enjoyed across the state of Colorado. Interestingly the red and blue on the flag are to be the same exact color red and blue as represented on the flag of the United States of America. The flag was designed by Andrew Carlisle Johnson[2] in 1911 and adopted by the Colorado General Assembly on June 5 of the same year. However, the legislature did not specify the size of the "C" or the exact shade of blue or red. Thus, some flags were in slightly different colors and had the "C" wholly within the center stripe. On February 28, 1929, the General Assembly added to the description of the flag that the blue and red would be the same color as the flag of the United States. On March 31, 1964, the legislature further dictated the diameter of the gold disc to be equal to the center stripe. The flag of the state of South Carolina has existed since 1775, and is based on one of the first Revolutionary War flags. The history of the flag is impressive and starts in 1775 with Colonel William Moultrie. It was during the Revolutionary War and there was no official national or state flag, needing a flag for signals for his troops the Colonel commisioned a blue flag to match the color of his troop's uniforms with the crescent moon which the 1st and 2nd regiments wore on their caps. This flag came to be known as the "Liberty Flag" and the "Moultrie Flag", when it's popularity exploded. In a 16 hour battle, the flag was shot down, but Sergeant William Jasper ran out into the open and raised the flag again, which rallied the entirety of the troops and saved South Carolina from conquest for 4 years. 3x5 Tennessee State Flag For Sale Made with bright, vibrant, and durable Solormax Nylon. 2 brass grommets Indoor/Outdoor Flag Made in America Sold by Americans The flag of the State of Tennessee sits on a red field with a stripe of white then blue on the flying side edge. In the center of the flag are 3 white circles on a blue circle surrounded by a white outline. These 3 stars represent the Grand Divisions of the state, East Tennessee, Middle Tennesse, and West Tennessee with the blue circle showing the unity of the 3 Grand Divisions and the white band showing the 3 are bound together as an indissoluble trinity. A Johnson City attorney serving in the Tennessee National Gaurd, Colonel LeRoy Reeves, designed the flag which was adopted officially on April 17, 1905. The Tennesse state flag has been the feature of mistakes by both National Geographic and the United States Postal Service. The USPS had sheet stamps representing each state in 1976. They printed all of the Tennesse Flag stamps upside down as the ignored how the stars are legally required to be displayed. In October of 1917, National Geographic reported that the 3 stars on the flag represent Tennesse as being the 3'rd state to join the union after the original 13 colonies. While true that Tennessee was the 16'th state to join the union, this alleged representation of the meaning of the stars was just made up and are completely false. We know this by simply reading what the flags creator, Colonel LeRoy Reeves, wrote on what the symbols of the flag represented. There are two official salutes to the Tennessee flag, both made official in 2006. The first salute:"Three white stars on a field of blueGod keep them strong and ever trueIt is with pride and love that weSalute the Flag of Tennessee." -written by Lucy Steele Harrison The second salute to the Tennessee flag:"Flag of Tennessee, I salute theeTo thee I pledge my allegiance withMy affection, my service and my life." w-ritten by Miss John Bostick

The flag consists of a deep blue vertical stripe 1/3rd the length of the flag with a pure white single five-pointed star in the center of the blue stripe with one point facing upward towards the heavens. Due to government clerical errors, there was no official flag for Texas from 1879-1933; however, the flag remained the state flag even with the states legislatures massive mistake when adopting the Revised Civil Statues of 1879. This happened due to the wording of the statues repealing all statues not expressly continued in force, and as the flag was not mentioned it the state was technically flagless until they passed the flag law in 1933 correcting their error. The Texas State Legislature also famously made other clerical mistakes in 1933 while adopting the state's pledge which officially became "Honor the Texas Flag of 1836; I pledge allegiance to thee, Texas, one and indivisible." Due to this wording, the pledge wasn't even for the "Lone Star Flag", rather it was a pledge to the 1836 Texas national flag, known as David G. Burnet's flag (shown below.) 3x5 Virginia State Flag For Sale Made with bright, vibrant, and durable Solormax Nylon. 2 brass grommets Indoor/Outdoor Flag Made in America Sold by Americans The Commonwealth of Virginia state flag consists of the obverse of the Virginia State Seal on a field of dark blue. The flag was first adopted in 1861, at the beginning of the American Civil War and then additional standardization to the flag in 1950. In the center of the flag, the seal sits with a female figure personifying the Roman virtue of Virtus, a figure of peace. She stands in a victory pose with the battle already won with the tip of her long spear facing down as she uses it as a rest. In her other hand, she holds a sheathed sword, a parazonium, which is a sword not of combat but on authority. Her foot stands on the chest of Tyranny, representing Great Brittain. The royal crown lay on the ground representing the Commonwealths new freedom from the monarchical control of the king. The figure of tyranny has a broken chain in his left hand with a useless whip in his right. These are symbolic of Virginia breaking the chains of tyranny and the relief from torturing whips used as acts of punishment by Great Brittian. Tyranny wears a robe of purple signifying Julius Ceasar and the Roman King Tarquinius Priscus. This image is encircled by sprigs of Virginia Creeperred flowers. In between the image and flowers at the top is the word "Virginia" with the words at the bottom reading "Sic Semper Tyrannis." Which translates to "Thus always to tyrants" but more popularly the motto is said to mean "Get your foot off my neck." Virginia State Seal When the colony of Virginia declared it's independence from Great Britain a committee was appointed to make an official seal for the Commonwealth of Virginia. The committee had only 4 members, Richard Henry Lee, George Mason, George Wythe, and Robert Carter Nicholas Sr., and as they did not want the seal to mimick the coats-of-arms used in Great Britain in the slightest they opted for a design inspired by Ancient Rome and adopted a two-sided Seal. (shown below) While the Great Seal (obverse side) is described above displaying on the flag the reverse contains 3 Roman goddesses, representing blessings of freedom and peace. The center goddess is the matron Libertas, the goddess of individual liberties, holding a wand with a Phrygian cap hanging from the top signifying her magical gifts. On her left, Ceres stands, the Roman goddess of agriculture. She holds an enormous stalk of wheat in one hand and a horn of plenty in her other to signify the abundance of Virginias harvest. On Libertas's right, Aeternitas stands to represent the eternity of Virginia. She holds a golden ball, a symbol of authority, with a phoenix standing on the ball to represent the effective government in the Commonwealth. Above the goddesses the motto of "Perseverando" which translates to "Persevering." Said to represent a reminder to all future generations the need to persist in maintaining the blessings of liberty.

The state of Washington is the only state flag that has a field of green, and the only state flag with the image of an American President on it. Around the image of Washington are the words "The Seal of the State of Washington 1889." 1889 references the year Washington became a state. The flag of the state of Washington was officially adopted on March 5, 1923 which means the state had no official flag for 34 years even though the State attempted to have one prior. Representative William J. Hughes proposed a commission to adopt a state flag; however, it was opposed by patriotic groups like the Sons of Veterans and the Sons of the American Revolution, stating that a state flag would be detrimental to the national flag. The Washington Daughters of the American Revolution are credited with getting the flag adopted. Prior to an official state flag Washingtons military did have a flag which was blue bunting with a golden profile of George Washington, which was first carried by the Washington Volunteer Infantry during the Philippine-American War. Also popular during the time of statehood until an official state flag was the state Seal in gold on a purple or green field. Washington State Seal During the state constitutional convention on August 21, 1889, Washington adopted it's state Seal, which was actually 1 month prior to officially becoming a state. The seal was updated in 1967 to display a better picture of George Washington based on Gilbert Stuart's famous portrait of him. While the seal has never been shrouded in controversy there was an attempt to change the state seal dramatically in 2010; however the proposal never qualified to be on the state ballot for the citizens to vote on. The proposed change would remove the image of Washington and replace it with the image of a tax payer with a tapeworm dressed in a three-piece suite attached to it's lower intestine. The words circling the image would be changed to "Committed to sucking the life blood out of each and every tax payer.” Below is an image of the 1st flag of the state of Washington which also shows the original state seal.
