The Montana state flag has the image of the Montana state seal centered on a field of blue. The seal contains a shovel, a plow, and a pick rest in an open field in front of the Great Falls of the Missouri River with in the image is a banner which reads "Oro y plata," which translates to "Gold and Silver.". Above the seal sits the word "Montana."
The flag is based on the original handmade banner carried by the First Montana Volunteers in the Spanish-American War in 1898 and was officially adopted as the Montana State flag in 1904.
