It's 8 red, white, and blue stripes represent the 8 main islands of Hawaii (Hawai'i, O'ahu, Kaua'i, Kaho'olawe, Lana'i, Maui, Moloka'i, and Ni'ihau, with the flag of Great Britain in the upper left-hand corner symbolizing it's friendship with the Britsih. The stripes follow the color sequence from top to bottom of; white, red, blue, white, red, blue, white, red.
It is the only American state flag which features a foreign country's flag. The Hawaii State flag continued to represent the area throughout the kingdom of Hawaii, the protectorate of Hawaii, the Republic of Hawaii, the territory of Hawaii and now the state of Hawaii.
